About

Photography is not a destination. It’s a journey. This blog is an account of that journey.

In researching my upcoming book, I’ve found many errors and misconceptions with regard to photography. But the truth is out there, and so I’ve begun a quest to seek it out. This blog began as a way of sharing my experiences with the rest of the photographic community, but it has evolved into a repository of information and discoveries related to the history, art, and technology of making photographs. My plan is for it to become a source of knowledge and inspiration for both the novice and experienced photographer.

About the Author

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a passion for Photography.

My life has taken me down many roads; computer programming, writing, designing, advertising, web development, teaching, managing; but through it all, photography has remained a constant.

At some point for me, a great abyss formed between traditional film photography and the introduction of digital photography, during which I was heavily steeped in the world of the great wide web. In a way, I feel fortunate that I didn’t get too caught up digital photography’s humble and primitive beginnings.

With the decline of the dot-com era, I took my Photoshop skills and moved on to become a professional photo retoucher.

Then in 2008, a camera came along which re-ignited my interest in photography. It allowed me to work as I always have, without having to relearn the art, and yet with the potential for new learning that was infectious. I had come to realize that as a retoucher, I was in fact part of the photographic process in the digital age. In life, things happen for a reason, and this was my time to champion digital photography.

Now, armed with years of experience in the lightroom world of digital photography, I have returned to that venerable position behind the camera as a born-again photographer. Knowing the challenges of retouching motivates me to avoid it at all cost when capturing my own images. Knowing it’s potential however, allows me to glean maximum performance out of the most humble equipment. Long live Camera RAW!

About the Blog

The Wanting Lens represents a stream of consciousness organized into a meaningful knowledge base. Although for the most part the posts are created as the facts reveal themselves, they are continually updated to insure accuracy. From time to time, some new posts may be added in the order of their natural, logical chronology. However, these posts will always be referenced in some other way using labels. I therefore encourage you to browse the links in the margin to find the information that is most useful to you.

Most of the images presented in this blog have undergone little or no processing. However, every once in a while, I come across an image which did not turn out not exactly as I had intended, and I feel the need to resurrect it with retouching. Such is the nature of digital photography.
