The adapter rings for the Sigma EM-140 DG do not have front filter threads. This means that you cannot add filters, or more importantly, close-up lenses in front of the flash. But with this trick, you can add them.
The reason you may wish to do this is to maintain the longest possible working distance between the flash and the subject. If the flash gets too close to the subject, there may not be enough room to light it properly.
I personally have another reason to do this. My Voigtländer 40mm f2.0 comes with a domed hood which doubles as a step down ring for the included 39mm closeup lens. So, I’ve devised this little workaround:
Attach a 49-52mm step up ring to the front of the 52mm Sigma Macro Flash Adapter ring using epoxy or cyanoacrylate adhesive. The 49mm threads of the step-up ring fit perfectly inside the Sigma adapter, and you will now be able to add a 52mm filter or additional step up rings as needed.
