AF Zoom-NIKKOR 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 D

AF Zoom-NIKKOR 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 D. Another outstanding standard zoom.
A couple of years ago, I ran into a chap at Starbucks who was telling me about a great 28-70mm lens that he had used…

He was carrying a well-worn D700 at the time, so I could tell he knew from full-frame lenses, and I’m pretty sure this is the one he was talking about. It’s super sharp and has a very close focusing distance. But best of all, being a “D” lens, it’s small and lightweight.

Its metal mount and stellar performance put it in a category with the new 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5, that is lenses offered as part of a bundle that are a cut above the average “kit” lens. And, it has something else going for it; I will outlive that lens.

With no RoHS lead-free solder, this lens’ circuitry won’t form “Tin Whiskers” that could render it inoperable before its time. But even if it did, you would still have a perfectly good manual focus lens, with a direct-coupled focus ring and a real aperture ring without all the bulk that no longer works. If this were a G lens, it would be pretty useless.
