Camera Update: Nikon Coolpix P7100

Coming in September, the Nikon Coolpix P7100 updates the venerable P7000. It apparently improves on it’s predecessor with snappier performance, and an improved software interface. It succumbs to peer pressure with an articulated LCD display and front command dial. Subtle cosmetic changes alter its appearance only slightly.

If the new design seems a little familiar, it’s only because it’s been done before…

Look familiar? The P7100 borrows its design from a classic.
The Contax G2’s grip and front command dial have found their way into the design of the P7100. Nikon could have used a thumbwheel design similar its DSLRs just as Canon did with the Powershot G12. I applaud their “backward” thinking; this is a great homage to a great camera. No, the P7100 is not a rangefinder, but like a rangefinder it is both compact, mirrorless and has a retractable lens.

This is an important model to follow as it represents an ongoing commitment to the traditional optical viewfinder in a full-featured fixed-lens zoom camera.
